DOLPHINS OR PORPOISES?
I did an eleven year sailing voyage around the world on board Exit Only with my family.
I just sailed for more than a year from Florida to the Sea of Cortez, and after more than 40,000 miles of sailing, I finally learned the difference between dolphins and porpoises.
Here in the Sea of Cortez, I made a rookie mistake. I called the dolphins by the name porpoises. I have brought shame upon Exit Only for the next 30 generations.
Now nobody will believe anything I write.
I have spent a ton of time on the water over the past thirty years, and it’s strange I never learned the difference between dolphins and porpoises.
Ignorance is bliss, and I apologize to the dolphins of the world when I called them porpoises.
So what are the obvious differences between dolphins and porpoises?
Dolphins have longer noses, bigger mouths, more curved dorsal fins and longer leaner bodies. They also vocalize more than porpoises.
Dolphins are found in greater numbers than porpoises with 32 dolphin species and 6 porpoise species.
Dolphins have cone-shaped teeth, and porpoises have spade-shaped teeth.
Dolphins are lean and mean, and porpoises are portly.
Surprisingly, orca whales (killer whales) are in the dolphin family.
Porpoises live 8 to 12 years and dolphins live up to 40 years.
I don’t believe in reincarnation, but if I ever have to come back for another round on planet earth, I would rather come back as a dolphin rather than a porpoise. Being a dolphin would probably be a pretty good gig.

Flying fish assault Exit Only in the middle of the night as we sail through the Arabian Gulf from the Maldives to Oman. And so begins our Red Sea adventures.

After you survive Pirate Alley, you must sail through the Gate of Sorrows (Bab Al Mandab) at the southern entrance to the Red Sea. The Gate of Sorrows lived up to its name with fifty knots of wind and a sandstorm that pummeled Exit Only for two days. Life is good.
