HEADSAIL REPAIR
In Galapagos, we discovered that there was a tear in the luff tape at the top of our headsail. I spent four hours repairing the luff by hand. Sewing by hand is hard, but it is effective.
Over the last month, we sailed 2000 miles non-stop to La Paz in Baha California Sur. I wondered if the repair would survive a two-thousand mile offshore voyage.
Today we lowered the headsail and checked the repair, and it looks as good as the day we did it. The luff survived without a problem.
That’s a huge relief because if the luff repair did not work, I would possibly need to replace the luff which is a job for a sailmaker.
I am encouraged that the luff survived, and there is a good chance it will not give us any more problems.
I am declaring this repair job a success because it passed the 2000 mile test.

Sailing through Pirate Alley between Yemen and Somalia involves calculated risk. It may not be Russian Roulette, but it is a bit of a worry. Follow Team Maxing Out as they navigate through Pirate Alley.
Stopping in Yemen was just what the doctor ordered. We refueled, repaired our alternator, and we made friends with our gracious Yemeni hosts. We also went to Baskins Robbins as a reward for surviving Pirate Alley.
After you survive Pirate Alley, you must sail through the Gate of Sorrows (Bab Al Mandab) at the southern entrance to the Red Sea. The Gate of Sorrows lived up to its name with fifty knots of wind and a sandstorm that pummeled Exit Only for two days. Life is good.
