CLOUD CORRELATION THREE
Isla Carmen is the big island in this picture.
The thin layer of clouds overlying Isla Carmen and the surrounding area have a gray color in the enhanced infrared image.
The gray color can indicate several different things.
Gray color can mean that the cloud tops are not that cold which indicates they are at a lower altitude.
The gray color can also mean that the clouds are very thin, and the underlying temperature of the land and sea is being registered by the enhanced infrared satellite picture.
Gray is a tricky color. It can make you think the clouds are lower than they actually are.
Thickness of the clouds is important.
Thick clouds emit more infrared radiation consistent with their altitude, and you can tell their approximate altitude based on the color of the enhanced infrared image.
Thin clouds are not big emitters, and their temperature profile (indicative of their altitude) may fool you.
The actual photograph of the clouds overlying Isla Carmen show that they are high altitude thin clouds, and as such, their fingerprint on enhanced infrared imagery will be gray because they are so thin.
When you see gray color on enhanced infrared imagery, you either have thin clouds that can be at any altitude, or you have thicker low lying clouds with a warmer infrared signature.
In the daytime it’s easy to figure out what is happening. Simply look up in the sky and see whether the clouds are thick or thin and check out their altitude with your eyes.
You can also look at the visible light image, and if you can see through the clouds to the underlying land and sea, you know that you are looking at thin clouds.

Flying fish assault Exit Only in the middle of the night as we sail through the Arabian Gulf from the Maldives to Oman. And so begins our Red Sea adventures.
