Named tropical storms and hurricanes are the Bain of a cruiser’s existence.
Yacht insurance would be very cheap if there were no tropical storms or hurricanes.
Unfortunately, on the planet where I sail, yacht insurance is expensive, and coverage is limited. If you choose to sail in a high risk hurricane zone during hurricane season, you will do so without insurance coverage for named storms and hurricanes. Not good.
In the red area of this graphic, you have no insurance coverage if a named tropical storm or hurricane comes your way.
When we left Galapagos and sailed to the Sea of Cortez, I had no idea what would happen to my insurance coverage from July through November. My master plan was to haul the boat out of the water if a hurricane came our way.
Today I finally called my insurance agent, and I was pleased to find out that as long as Exit Only is north of Latitude 27 (Santa Rosalia), I have named storm coverage for Exit Only.
Dang Wangi. Wow. Awesome. Unbelievably good news.
That really takes the pressure off for getting far north in the Sea of Cortez. I can get north of Latitude 27 in two days if a storm heads our way.
All I need to do is check the Mean Surface Analysis and Surface Prognosis weather charts, download a confirmatory satellite photo, and then decide where I want to be for the next week.
Weather rules the lives or Real Ocean Cruisers, and insurance tells us where we have to go.
Now I am a man with a plan, and that plan is 27 degrees north latitude.

Flying fish assault Exit Only in the middle of the night as we sail through the Arabian Gulf from the Maldives to Oman. And so begins our Red Sea adventures.
